The abode of clouds

Meghalaya is a land of mist, waterfalls and some of the cleanest villages in Asia. The Khasi people have grown bridges from living tree roots for centuries, the Umngot river at Dawki is so clear you can see the riverbed from a boat, and the canyons of Laitlum fall away into cloud.

Our Meghalaya tour packages cover Shillong, Cherrapunji (Sohra), the double-decker root bridge at Nongriat, Mawlynnong and Dawki in 5 to 6 nights, and can be combined with Kaziranga. Our All Girls Meghalaya group trip is the perfect first solo trip.

October – February

Clear season

Pleasant 10–22°C, clear skies and the Umngot river at its most transparent. Shillong gets chilly in December–January.

March – May

Spring

Warm days and blooming cherry and rhododendron trees; occasional pre-monsoon showers.

June – September

Monsoon

Waterfalls at full power and misty hills — beautiful but very wet; Dawki river turns muddy and treks get slippery.

Meghalaya travel tips

  • Carry a light rain jacket and quick-dry clothes in every season.
  • Wear trekking shoes with grip for the root-bridge steps.
  • Many villages charge a small entry or parking fee — keep change handy.
  • Respect Khasi customs: ask before photographing homes and people.
  • Network is weak in Nongriat and Dawki — download offline maps.
  • Start the Nongriat trek early to avoid the midday heat.
